CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you're hopping on the train this Thanksgiving holiday, you're not alone and officials have some tips to make sure your trip is easy as pie.

While the day before Thanksgiving is one of Amtrak's busiest travel days of the year, Spokesman Marc Magliari said it's no longer the busiest.

"Some people take the whole week off, but most people need to be back on Sunday night or Monday morning for school, work or home," Magliari said. "Sunday is even busier than Thanksgiving Eve."

Magliari said the railroad is still expecting a strong Thanksgiving, in which extra trains will head to both downstate Illinois and Michigan.

"Some of the trains will have slightly different schedules. Look at your boarding documents to make sure you're on the right train at the right place at the right time."

Leftovers are welcome aboard Amtrak trains, but Magliari said there are rules: carry-ons can weigh no more than 150 pounds.

"It's better for everyone if people follow that allowance and not bring six pies, a bunch of giblets and dressing with them."
