WAUKEGAN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – There was an eye-popping discovery, and recovery, Monday morning off Waukegan Harbor.

The call came into Waukegan Animal Control around 9:30 a.m.

"A kayaker was seeing an alligator swimming at the Waukegan lakefront," City Spokesman David Motley said. "Obviously, that's something we haven't heard of ever, as far as I know."

Motley said he had trouble believing the report, until he saw the four-foot long creature for himself.

“This is clearly an anomaly."

Motley said the animal, which had its mouth taped shut, was taken to the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest for treatment and observation.

"The challenge is that these types of animals are adopted by people and then they don't know what to do with them when they grow beyond capacity of their location," Motley said. "It's just mind-boggling that someone would think to discard this animal at the lake."
