CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Lakeview Alderman Tom Tunney suggests he’s not losing any sleep over it and is still a Chicago Cubs fan, but the team’s owners want to see him out of the City Council.

Tom Tunney, 44th Ward Alderman, said the Ricketts family that owns the Cubs is looking to finance someone who can defeat him in next year's election.

"It's not that there's a serious challenger, it's this dark money, they have put out 15 to 16 pieces of mail that I am the worst thing that has ever happened. The neighbors see through that," Tunney said.

A spokesman for the Ricketts family told the Chicago Tribune that while the Cubs have been working to develop the North Side, Tunney has stood in the way.

Tunney said he must also protect the interest of the residents.

"I do enjoy working with the Cubs and balancing sometimes very delicate interests. Someone would say, as the article says, what more can they want? Well, there's a lot more," Tunney said.

"If someone does not stand up to a billionaire...they want to shut the streets down, you know that, they want to own everything at their price."

Still, Tunney said, he is happy and a Cubs fan.
