CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Embattled 25th Ward Ald. Danny Solis has resigned as chairman of the City Council’s influential Zoning Committee.

The announcement came Tuesday through Mayor Emanuel’s office and comes amid reports that Solis wore a wire for federal investigators while he had conversations with Ald. Ed Burke, who now faces federal charges of attempted extortion.

Speculation is that Solis was under the federal microscope and wore a wire to mitigate potential legal danger he faces. He is not seeking re-election.

The revelations about Solis and charges against Burke have had a toxic effect on some mayoral candidates with ties to either alderman. Burke resigned his influential post as chairman of the Finance Committee but has said he has done nothing wrong.
