(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Stocks closed mixed Tuesday as earnings season kicked-off with better-than-expected results from the banking sector.

The S&P 500 lost 5, the NASDAQ dropped 22 and the Dow Jones industrial average closed up 32 points, settling to 28,939.

"We got news later in today that said this trade deal we will be signing later this week, we are going to keep those tariffs on until after the election, and that kind of caught the market by surprise and pushed down stocks," said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management in Chicago.

"That kind of cast a little bit of a cloud over the market and traded sideways to down after that news hit the wires.”

He added that he still finds stocks in the tech and banking sector attractive at current levels.
