(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Stocks closed mixed on Thursday, recovering most of their losses from earlier in the day, after concerns surrounding the spread of the deadly coronavirus subsided.

The S&P 500 gained 3, the NASDAQ added 18 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 26 points, settling to 29,160.

“Is the coronavirus influencing the market? Yes. Is it a big influence? No," Chuck Carlson, CEO of Horizon Investment Services, says.

“If you look at the numbers of people in the United States that die from the flu every year, it starts to put that number in perspective, with what's going on with the coronavirus.”

Carlson also noted that he currently finds shares of Alphabet (GOOG), Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) attractive at current levels.
