CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you are looking for ways to help nurses on the front lines of the pandemic while staying safe at home, now is your chance.

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downer's Grove is asking for donated hand-sewn masks. Donations can be dropped at the shipping and receiving dock at any Advocate hospital.

As first responders and hospitals face mask shortages, the need for protective equipment keeps growing. And as experts say masks can help slow the spread of the virus, people have begun making their own masks at home and donating them to local hospitals.

Making a homemade mask is simpler than you might think. All you need is some basic cloth or fabric and sewing materials. You can use an old t-shirt, a bandana or any other clean cloth lying around the house.

The best part about making these masks is you can get creative while also helping those in need. If you wish to donate to the hospital, email for more information.

On Friday, Gov. Pritzker, along with the CDC and the federal government, urged the public to wear masks when going out, although Trump said it's still voluntary.
