EVERGREEN PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says the number of people who may not have been vaccinated by a southwest suburban pediatrician is larger than he'd originally believed.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

The Cook County Sheriff's office is trying to contact 2,500 people who were patients of a now-deceased southwest suburban pediatrician – to tell them they might not be vaccinated after all.

These people were patients of Dr. Van Koinis of Evergreen Park. His body was found in a forest preserve in September; he apparently died by suicide.

Dart said Monday several people have already contacted his office, saying they went to a doctor to check their immunity.

"We've had seven different callers representing 12 children and two adults -- a total of 14 patients so far - who asked for immunization. And only one of the 14 had gotten immunized.

"So,” he added, “there's numerous families, numerous individuals, who clearly had thought they were being immunized and they were not."

Sheriff Dart says Koinis's suicide note was "dark” and seemed to cast doubt on whether he'd vaccinated his patients for at least nine years.
