40th Ward Volunteers Turn Out For 'Rapid Response' Training In Wake Of ICE Raids

July 20, 2019 - 2:14 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ald. Andre Vazquez of the 40th Ward developed a "rapid response" team to hand out cards telling residents that they don't have to reveal their immigration status to police.

Volunteers turned out despite the heat Sunday at his "ICEbreakers" training for people who will visit homes and businesses to hand out the cards.

"Everybody who lives everywhere are worthwhile human beings and don't deserve to be ripped away from their homes," said 40th Ward resident Tristan Pence. "This is not a matter of just whether people are following the law or anything. It's a matter of whether you feel safe in your home."
